Upper Primary

With the foundations having been established, the Upper Primary Phase places an increased emphasis on
critical thinking skills, study techniques, research and presentation skills. Our specialist subject teachers
prepare the scholars for their next phase in the Middle School (Gr 7 – 9). Each scholar determines their
goals and aims to achieve their personal best. Exams are not written, but regular informal and formal
assessments test the understanding and application of subject content.

Curriculum

English 1st language – we develop mastery of the language to facilitate fluency of communication, develop reading and comprehension skills, and to inculcate a knowledge of the structure of the language.

Mathematics – teachers encourage logical, structured and lateral thinking. Maths lessons include class teaching, individual help where necessary, group work, practical work, oral and written problem-solving activities.

Natural Science – our aim is to support scientific enquiry, independent research and investigation. Knowledge is easily accessible; our challenge is to educate our students to interpret and use this information.

Social Studies – the topics covered promote intellectual curiosity and an understanding of the complexities that society faces, both past and present. Students are taught to think independently and express their opinions on a variety of topics.

Additional languages – we offer Afrikaans 2nd Language, French Foreign Language and German Foreign Language. Scholars are required to learn one of these languages and may continue with their chosen language at St Paul’s College Middle / High School, or opt to take a different language.

Technology – in addition to learning more advanced skills during ICT (Integrated Communication Technology), technology is used to support and enrich our teaching. Cross curricular work takes place using essential technology and presentation skills.

Non-promotional subjects – our specialist teachers present Music, Art, Drama, Public Speaking, as well Guitar, which is a private optional extra activity. Chess can be taken as a class activity or with a skilled coach as an optional extra activity.

Extracurricular Activities

As can be seen from the subjects offered during the school day, we have a multi-faceted and holistic approach to education. We believe in introducing our scholars to various disciplines to cater for the unique needs of each child. Activities offered develop confidence, creativity, open-mindedness, curiosity, critical judgment and aesthetic appreciation. All activities are presented by skilled staff.

Sport

St Paul’s Primary School offers a variety of sporting opportunities which are presented by specialists on the
school campus. The sport programme during this phase builds on what has been introduced previously and
caters for, enhances and incorporates all ability levels. Our compulsory programme assists our scholars in
learning the skills and values of a healthy lifestyle from an early age.

At St Paul’s, we regard a win as a wonderful achievement, but our greatest reward is seeing our scholars
play a game with true sportsmanship. This is where we need parents to understand our ethos and support
us in the same manner.
